CHILDREN'S PROGRAM

The Atlanta Choong-Sil Kwan Tae Kwon Do children's program offers you a unique chance to give your child a head start in life. We recognize the fact that it is important for the children to know how to protect themselves through self-defense. But we teach much more than punches and kicks. We also give children the ability to protect themselves from life's every day risks. Things such as low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and procrastination are pitfalls children face everyday. Our classes give children the "life-skills" to exceed expectations. The structure of the classes is designed to develop leaders.

LIFE SKILLS

Our primary focus is to teach life skills. The structure of the classes is designed to develop leaders. The weekly mental and philosophical lessons are designed to strengthen our students mentally and physically.

Our program is designed to:

  • Instill Courtesy and Respect to build strong relationships with adults and peers.
  • Increase Focus and Concentration, which will pay off with better grades in school.
  • Increase Self-Esteem for a positive attitude.
  • Build Confidence and Courage to do what's right when faced with peer pressure.
  • Perseverance to follow through with values such as Honesty and Integrity.
  • Give your child the Self-Discipline to be their absolute best.
  • Self-Defense skills that may, someday, save their life.

These principles are the foundation of our Children's program. Our classes combine fun and excitement, which are essential tools used to increase the learning and performance of students. The Atlanta Choong-Sil Kwan Tae Kwon Do Team has made a strong commitment to today's youth by helping children understand the importance of striving towards excellence and reaching their full potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) How young do you take students?
Generally we prefer students to be at least 3 years old.  Usually by this age, a child has enough motor skills and concentration to benefit from the class.  We offer special classes for children age 3-5 to help prepare them for our regular children's class.

2) My child has ADHD. Will they benefit from a martial arts program?
Absolutely!  ADHD children need a very structured environment that has clear-cut boundaries and rules.  A.C.T. has many children who have been diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.  We help these children develop confidence and concentration.   Our program can also be a positive outlet for children with extra energy.

3) Are there any other fees besides the monthly fees?
Students, who get serious about training in the martial arts, will have opportunities to attend extra-curricular activities such as tournaments and seminars.  In addition, we offer equipment that can help augment a students training.  All extra-curricular programs are optional and are not required for a student to be successful in our program.

4) We are concerned that our child may "karate-chop" their siblings.  How does Atlanta Choong-Sil Kwan Tae Kwon Do keep this from occurring?
Although it is impossible for us to monitor your child's behavior at home, this type of behavior rarely occurs.  Children quickly learn to value the skills that they are gaining and realize that there is a right time and a wrong time to use their skills.  We help children understand the difference through our daily "mat-chats" on courtesy, respect, and discipline.

5) What is the difference between Tae Kwon Do and Karate?

"Tae Kwon Do" is a Korean martial art that translated means "foot - hand -art". Learning Tae Kwon Do teaches students how to use their hands and feet to improve the mind and the body. Tae Kwon Do is one of the most popular martial arts in the world and can be found in every major country. In addition to being a popular form of self-improvement, it is also Korea's national sport. "Karate" is a Japanese martial arts that, translated, means “empty hand". Although both martial arts share similar movements, the country and customs are different.

6) Should children study Martial Arts?

In general, yes. Some of the possible positives would be control of aggressiveness, instilling self-respect and self-control, as well as self-defense. The style that a child should take is a totally different question, and is directly influenced by the style, if any, of the parents. It will of course be convenient if the child can practice with, or at least in the same school as, the parents. The major issue with children in the martial arts is the integrity and trustworthiness of the teacher and the school. The joints and connective tissues of children are more vulnerable to injury than those of adults. Keep this in mind when selecting a style and school for a child, and discuss it with the instructor. Schools which allow aggressive joint locks to be applied to children or don't train them to refrain from snapping/hyper-extending elbows on strikes and knees on kicks should be avoided. (It is for this same reason that good baseball coaches will not allow young pitchers to throw pitches that require hard snapping of the arm - like curve balls). Throws, however, are quite different; the small size of children makes them naturals for arts that require falling down.

7) Are Martial Arts right for my child?

  • An alternative to team sports: There are many advantages to participating in martial arts over team sports such as soccer and baseball. If you have a child who does not enjoy team-related activities, martial arts provide a way for your little competitor to learn not only the physical skills of athletics but the mental skills such as concentration and memory.
  • Safer than other activities: Study after study has shown that participation in a well-run martial arts school is far safer than nearly any other physical activity your child is likely involved in, including sports such as soccer. "Kids are always showing up for class with injuries they've gotten in another sport," says Chris Goedecke, author of "Smart Moves: A Kids' Guide to self-defense" (Simon & Schuster Children's, 1995) and a karate black belt. "I tell them, `You ought stick to something safe --like karate.’"
  • Confidence builders: Some kids begin martial arts with self-confidence problems, because they are small or fragile or being bullied, and they quickly begin to look and feel more confident. "Martial arts training can even be an introduction to good manners.
  • Working out the aggression: Another advantage of the martial arts disciplines, according to instructors, is that they discourage aggressive behavior outside of class. Since children who "bully" others often have self-esteem issues, the martial arts help to strengthen self-confidence.
